The Fiber Center To Exhibit the Maine Crochet Coral Reef Again in 2013

Well have no fear you haven't lost the opportunity to see the most amazing fiber art exhibition that Maine has ever seen! After nearly two years in the making the Fiber Center debuted the Maine Reef exhibition to rave reviews. After all of that hard work and effort it seemed sacrilege to take the exhibit down having only shown it for 8 days. It was unanimously decided by the powers that be to show it again during the 2013 fair from September 29th through October 6th.

THE MAINE MITTEN PROJECT - 2012 -2013

Kind souls making Mittens, Hats & Scarves to help keep Maine's Homeless children and adults warm.

"The Maine Mitten Project” is being launched during fair week 2012. Free information flyers with patterns will be available and knitting classes will be offered. Anyone who knits, crochets, felts or wants to learn how, can make mittens, hats or scarves for children and adults to donate for a great cause. The handmades will be collected throughout the year and exhibited at the Fiber Center during fair week in 2013. At the end of the 2013 exhibit, items will be delivered to Homeless Shelters for distribution to Mainer’s most in need. As we identify the organizations that will be distributing our mittens, they will be listed on the blog.

Information flyers about the project will be available at the Fiber Center from Sunday, September 30, toSaturday,October 6, from9am - 9pm., andSunday October 7, 9-6pm. Maine author, Robin Hansen, is providing the basic mitten patterns. Hansen has written multiple books about Maine mitten lore with patterns. Hansen will also be demonstrating mitten knitting at The Fiber Center on Wednesday October 3, from 11-3pm.

It is our hope that you will be inspired to create for this project whether it's because you love the Traditional Arts, want to learn them, or are a kind soul who wants to help those in need.

THE MAINE REEF PROJECT- 2011 - 2012

Is a Satellite of the Worldwide Hyperbolic Crochet Reef Project created by Margaret and Christine Werthiem of the Institute For Figuring in L. A., CA.

This project was funded by the West Oxford Agricultural Society, presenters of the Fryeburg Fair.

Members of the community and from as far away as Hawaii created examples of Sea Life using yarns, fibers and Traditional Fiber Arts. With nearly 100 contributors, and hundreds of donated pieces, the Fiber Center will feature THE MAINE REEF Installation during this year's fair from Sunday September 30th - Sunday, October 7th.
